What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that causes pain and inflammation along the distribution of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve begins in your lower back and extends down the backs of both of your legs through your buttocks, hamstrings, calves, and feet. Common signs of sciatica include:

  • Buttock pain
  • Sharp, shooting pain down the leg
  • Numbness and tingling in the leg
  • Weakness of the lower leg
  • Pain that’s worse when walking, bending forward, or exercising

Pain may also worsen with coughing, sneezing, or using the restroom.

What causes sciatica?

Certain lifestyle habits, physical changes, or anatomical structures that put pressure on the sciatic nerve may cause sciatica. Sciatica can be a complex issue, and the symptoms may be the only obvious sign of an underlying issue. The team works with you to reduce your discomfort and eliminate underlying conditions causing your symptoms for better outcomes during treatment. Common causes include:

  • Poor posture
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Arthritis
  • Herniated discs

Each cause of sciatica ranges in severity and can cause mild to severe symptoms, depending on your anatomy and pain tolerance.

How is sciatica diagnosed?

Dr. Stayberg performs a comprehensive consultation and physical exam to determine the root cause of your sciatica symptoms. During your consultation, he asks about the location and severity of your symptoms and activities that worsen or improve your pain.

After your consultation, he assesses your flexibility, muscle strength, and nerve function. He also takes you through a series of orthopedic assessments that may put tension on your sciatic nerve, depending on the position you’re in. If appropriate, he may refer you for X-rays or an MRI.

Based on his findings, Dr. Stayberg explains your diagnosis and the cause of your symptoms.

How is sciatica treated?

Treatment for sciatica is based on your diagnosis and any underlying factors contributing to your pain. The ultimate goal of treatment is to relieve the inflammation and irritation to the sciatic nerve that is causing your pain.

Dr. Stayberg takes a multi-step approach to treatment, incorporating chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, physiotherapy, exercise therapy, spinal decompression, and nutritional counseling to reduce inflammation and pain.

Your treatment plan is customized based on your specific needs, and Dr. Stayberg works with you to combine therapies and treatments that are effective and as noninvasive as possible. In some cases, he may refer you to a specialist for additional treatments if conservative care isn’t enough.
